It was the week after Christmas 2012 and I was spending time with my sons after the holidays; we were getting ready to go out to a dinner with my sister who was visiting from Virginia. I felt a tightness and pain in my chest but thought I needed to rest after the stress of the holidays. Luckily, my fourteen-year-old son, Spencer, had just completed CPR training at school and was in the living room with me. He knew all the symptoms of a heart attack and started asking questions while dialing 911. Fast forward three days and I was on my way back home after having surgery to place a stint when a 99% blockage was discovered in my left artery – the tell-tale ‘widowmaker’. The doctors were certain of how different my outcome could have been had Spencer not been there with me.
My son saved my life that day because of his CPR training and heart health knowledge. I’m proud of his quick actions and how we’ve been able to make small changes over the last decade that have created a healthier lifestyle for our family. I’m now on the board of the American Heart Association and pleased to know that CPR kits have been placed in every public high school in Florida’s Lee and Collier Counties. I’m proof that these kits save lives!
