“Graduating high school is supposed to be one of the happiest moments of your life, but my experience was very different. My father was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a terminal form of cancer, in June of 1991. I spent the summer between high school and college driving my dad to chemo treatments. He passed away two weeks after I started college. Losing him turned me, my mom and my three sisters’ lives upside down. I had received a partial scholarship to play college basketball at the University of St. Francis University, but ended up red-shirting, as I had to get a job to help pay for college. After that first year, I never went back to playing college basketball, and although it was tough to give up the sport that I loved, it made me more disciplined and devoted to school and work. I turned 45 this year—same age as my dad when he passed—and I reflect on how young he was and how much I miss him. Because cancer took my dad too soon, I am passionate about supporting the fight against cancer.”
