“October 20, 2017 is permanently etched into my memory because it’s the day I officially became a U.S. citizen. In May 1998, my family of seven fled war-torn Bosnia and Herzegovina, coming to the U.S. and settling in Kansas City, MO. Even though I was just 9 years old, I knew I was safe and this was the place I would call home.
I have always considered myself an American, even though it took more than 20 years to become official in the land of opportunity. Obtaining citizenship can be a cumbersome process but as I reflect back on the years of hard work, sacrifices, struggles and challenges—I can look back with a smile on my face because now I’m a U.S. citizen. It is an honor to be part of the political system and have the ability to voice my opinion for the greater good of the next generation.”
