With 30+ years of farm management experience, Steve Myers, SVP & Director of Ag Services & Brokerage, shares his expertise and deeply-rooted passion for leading our team of agriculture professionals.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working in the agriculture industry?
A: Farmland is personal and has a personality—unlike any other investment. We don’t generally see people hugging their Apple stock (no offense, Apple!) like a farmer is connected to their land. Plus, every farm operation is different—while they may share similarities, no two operations are alike. In a nutshell—the farms, farm owners and farmers are all unique.
Q: Tell us an interesting fact about the agriculture business.
A: An acre of land is 43,560 square feet, which is roughly the size of an American football field WITHOUT the end zones (do the math!). So when you hear x acres, think x football fields!
We have this concept that farming is right out of the American Gothic painting, pitchfork and all. In most cases, agriculture today is on the cutting edge of technology with GPS, self-driving tractors, big data and more to produce food and fiber for the world.
Q: If you owned a plot of land, where would it be? Would it be farmland or a vacation spot?
A: I do own a little bit of the earth! I own farm ground in Schuyler County in western Illinois. It is my little slice of heaven.
Q: Looking back on your career, what would you tell yourself as a young agriculture professional?
A: As with any career, live your passion. Early on I was very livestock-oriented, but now I am excited about raising crops. The big tent of agriculture allows me to grow both personally and professionally while working alongside some of the best farmland, farmland owners and farmers in the world.
With more than 90,000 acres under management and over 100 years of combined experience, our professionals are committed to maximizing value for our landowners—cultivating growth for 150 years.
