Volunteer Spotlight Featuring Mary Potthast

January 2023 BUSEY'S VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Mary Potthast

Living the Busey promise in her community, Mary Potthast, Financial Executive, is being recognized as Busey’s Volunteer of the Month.

Growing up, Mary was an active member of the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois. As a committed Girl Scout for over 13 years, she eventually earned ‘The Gold Award’ – the most prestigious award in Girl Scouting. This award is given to individuals who develop and carry out lasting solutions to issues in their neighborhoods. Mary has enjoyed the transition from being an active Girl Scout as a child to a camp leader in her older years. Her successful upbringing with her own Girl Scout troop has helped lead her daughter down a similar path as well!

Mary is currently working alongside her daughter’s troop leader with goals to help give additional opportunities for the troop to take part in more hands-on activities. These activities include learning from NASA Scientists to receive the ‘Space Science Investigator’ Badge, “traveling” virtually to Hawaii to learn about Monk Seals from the Hawaii Marine Animal Response team and attending programs at the St. Louis Zoo. These programs help raise well-rounded individuals and provide the opportunity for the girls to try something new. Mary believes that troops are only as good as their leaders, so she encourages parents to take an active role with their children’s passions to ensure the best experiences.

Congratulations Mary!
